Queer Britain Oral Histories Project – Invitation to a workshop to explore local LGBTQ+ history at Beamish Museum on Sunday 21 April from 1 – 4 pm

Queer Britain Museum is running an LGBTQ+ oral histories project in 2024 funded by Mindsets + Missions to capture untold stories from within the UK’s LGBTQ+ communities. The project is also encouraging heritage organisations to welcome and champion these LGBTQ+ stories to ensure they are heard.

Queer Britain has teamed up with Beamish Museum to host a workshop for LGBTQ+ communities. We want to hear your stories and experiences of being LGBTQ+ in the North East. We would love you to put forward a few members from your group to take part, along with representatives from other local LGBTQ+ groups.

The workshop will be held on Sunday 21 April from 1-4pm in the Bank Board Room of Beamish Museum’s 1900s Town. It will focus on the importance of queer stories as oral history and will be run by Aunt Nell, award winning LGBTQ+ podcast makers who created the Log Books and Black and Gay, Back in the Day. Beamish staff will also be present to talk about work the museum is doing and wants to do to ensure LGBTQ+ stories are reflected at Beamish, through its collections and everyday engagement, and how they want to work with local LGBTQ+ groups and individuals on this.

Workshop participants will receive £15 towards travel and completing 2 short surveys before and after the workshop to demonstrate the impact of being part of the project. They will also receive free entry into the museum on the day of the workshop.

We hope that the chance to be part of the workshop will be a great opportunity to hear about LGBTQ+ stories in your area and to come and visit Beamish.
